Abel's life changed forever when, during a confrontation with a band of poachers, the tattoos on his skin began to move. Tattoo Empowerment:

The secret tattoo artist who can empower his tattoos, seems to move around a lot. Abel has made it a point to seek him out, no matter the cost, in order to get specific tattoos to increase his Gifts. Even though Abel has Gifts of his own, he still craves more power.

Body Art Animation: Abel's body is covered with various tattoos that he can animate and control simply by touching the region of his body where the tattoo is located. The effects discontinue upon his command or if he should happen to be incapacitated. Only the empowered tattoos cannot come to life.

There are not many empowered tattoos as it becomes increasingly difficult to find that tattoo artist. The empowered tattoos so far aquired are:

_____Healing Touch: Granted by a caduceus symbol on Abel's left palm, allowing him to heal the injuries of those he touches.

_____Illness Inducement: A tattoo on his right palm in the shape of a biohazard symbol can be used to make people become extremely ill.

_____Optic Blasts: Abel has been shown using eye beams similar to those of Reverb.

_____Regenerative Healing Factor: Bestowed by a cross symbol on the back of his neck.

_____Selective Detonation: An "explosive" symbol tattooed on his right bicep allows Abel to blow up objects with enough force to punch through walls.

_____Speed: Flight: Bestowed by tattoos of wings on his back.

_____Strength: Superhuman: Granted by a tattoo on his left arm which appears to mimic the texture of Ironclad's flesh when he becomes metal.

_____Telepathy: A set of two lightning bolt tattoos on Abel's forehead gives him low-level telepathy, though it can be blocked by psi-shields. The design was taken from a comic book depiction of psychic abilities.
