TIMELINE OF VELGARTH
Below is a monumental effort to record every event within the lands of Velgarth. As each new chronicle is written, new events will appear and old events may be adjusted.
In a world of poets and historians, there will be many different viewpoints and histories. Not all will line up with reality.
Therefore, it is the effort of the Herald-Chronicler, the Guard Archivist, the Collegium Historian, the Rethwellan Royal Archivist, a kyree historian, and their assistants, to find the truth and pinpoint, to the best of their ability, the exact moment of these events.
Those moments in history that are not yet verified (
During this process, Collegium Historian Assistant Trica, is updating the Rolls over on the Valdemar Wiki. Check it out to stay updated.
📖 ♘ ↣ ☼ ↣ All entries are the combined efforts of Collegium Historian Assistant Trica and Herald-Chronicler Assistant, Joshuah (when he's not off on Circuit). |

Fun Fact: Using our current calendar, the book Beyond takes place roughly 2 years before the Founding of Valdemar, putting it at 2 BF or 2 BC (in our calendar).
What is fun about this is that 2 BC, in the Chinese Zodiac, is the Year of the Horse.
Baron Valdemar escaped the Eastern Empire in the Year of the Horse.

The Murasa Emperor Shelass accepts kestra'chern into the Haighlei Empire. Their rules, customs, roles and ranks become fixed at that time, as is true of everything in the change-resistant Haighlei Empire

Magic work is what modern-day mages would classify as journeyman-level. There are few mentors, and spellwork is mostly experimentation: frequently lethal. Mage careers often end in a flash of embers. Some wizards keep notes, and pass them on. They collect information, develop theories, and build skills approaching Adept level
📖
Around 1200 BF
Adept Mages can be more powerful than royalty or warlords. They are strategic weapons; their diplomatic alliances and manipulations shape entire nations. They can intimidate a rival or turn the tide of battle. Everyone, from the highest to the lowest, knows that Mages are to be respected
📖
Around 1100 BF
Adepts swiftly learn to combine the work of multiple mages. The first Great Work occurs when magic is “used to enrich an eroded floodplain, while the baron's men built levees to make use of the renewed soil.” This involves less than 60 supporting Mages and a single Adept
📖
One of the supporting journeymen is a very young Mage named Urtho
📖
Kiyamvir Ma'ar is born in Predain. Also known as Mage of Black Fire
📖
Around 1095 BF
Urtho, now an Adept, begins holding "movable feasts" that travel from village to city, that were actually "salons" where Mages would gather together and share Notes on their spells and other works. These salons advance magical theory "to a level that might have taken a century more, had they not flourished." The salons eventually collapse due to schism and war
📖
1090 BF
In the years after the salons
Urtho develops a set of "weights and measures" for magic use
📖
Around 1089 BF
Urtho becomes known as the Mage of Silence due to his ability to only use enough energy to get the job done and no more, so none can be detected by other mages
📖
Around 1085 BF
By this time Adepts are numbered in the scores and are as influential as kings
📖
Animal Husbandry, enhanced by magic, becomes a new trend of the Adept world. Making creatures stronger, swifter, larger and/or smarter is called "uplifting"
📖
One of "Urtho's predecessors" uplifts the kyree
📖
Khal Herta, an Adept, begins "uplifting" the hertasi. "The wild hertasi were mild-tempered reptiles, available in large quantities, living fairly simple lives." After Khal Herta's efforts, hertasi "had simple structures, organized hunting and fishing, and rudimentary medicine
📖
Ma'ar is a mage apprentice and his master’s petty clerk. He learns to see people as numbers - the only important thing is to achieve a certain result
♘ ☼
📖
Around 1080 BF
When Khal Herta dies, some bands of his followers bring his notes and all of the hertasi to Urtho at Ka'venusho to save them from certain subjugation by the unified Kyamvir tribes. With the semi-sentient hertasi, Urtho takes the approach of increasing the intelligence of hertasi social leaders, and encouraging them to breed with their subordinates, and then increasing the intelligence of their offspring. It creates a surprisingly seamless acceptance among the hertasi, for those who are far smarter than any had been before were their own children
☼
📖
Urtho's greatest work, the gryphons, will take 40 years of work by 300 mages and their assistant staff
📖
1070 BF
"Native magic fields have been harnessed like never before by cabals and individuals"
♘ ☼
📖
Urtho intends to plant independent groups of gryphons "in little aeries in some of the wilder parts of the mountains, creating yet another population of non-human intelligences, as [his] predecessors had done with the hertasi and the kyree." This plan falls apart with the advent of "war among the Great Mages."
📖
Firebirds are deliberately bred as weapons for the Mage Wars

📖
1045 BF
Low-level mage Melysatra becomes the bearer of the sentient magical sword Need. She had been a low-level mage in Urtho's army, valuable as much for the fighting skills Need gave her as for her magic
☼
📖
1040 BF
Urtho's team finally produces gryphons. Under Urtho's direction they continue to design more gryphons based on various types of raptors: broadwings, goshawks, suntails, etc.
☼
📖
Urtho controls the natural reproduction of the gryphons by keeping the requirements secret, and exaggerating the spell that must be cast. He only grants fertility to gryphons who have proven themselves, wanting to ensure that they will make good parents
📖
Gryphons are born alive. Gryphon nestlings benefit from mage energies, an early source of power. They are instinctive mages, using the power about them for defense and for mating flights

Kechara, the gryphon, is born. Kechara is the first of a new gryfalcon design model, but she is "misborn" with physical and mental defects. She is a powerful Mindspeaker and Empath. Urtho names her from the Kale'd'ain word ke'chara, "beloved," and keeps her in his Tower, not expecting her to live long
☼
📖
📖
Skandranon Rashkae, the gryphon, is born. Skan is the first born of Urtho's final new gryphon design model
☼
📖
1017 BF
Zhaneel, the gryphon, is born. She is smaller and has design differences that lead others to believe she is misborn. Zhaneel is actually the first proper gryfalcon, since Kechara was an actual misborn attempt of the type

Amberdrake is thirteen years old
♘ ☼
Amberdrake is sent to the College of Chirurgeons in Predain. Dismissing the existence of Gifts and Empathy, they teach him how to set bones, mix medicines, and diagnose and treat illnesses. His empathy picks up so much emotion from the many patients that he is constantly ill, and the chirurgeons' treatments make him sicker. As a "barbarian," Amberdrake is subject to bullying

Ma'ar has united dozens of warring tribes and touts them as part of his Superior Breed. Ma'ar raises an army of followers and supporters in his quest for power. Students cite Ma'ar's sayings as an excuse for persecuting Amberdrake. Ma'ar is made Prime Minister of Predain
📖

📖
Ma'ar eliminates anyone who opposes his rule—and anyone who might oppose war with the neighboring lands
📖
Amberdrake arrives at his home in Therium starving and fevered, but finds his family gone

📖
📖
Silver Veil finds a new master for Amberdrake to continue his apprenticeship, an older man named Lorshallan, who teaches him to Heal and to use his Empathy as they journey towards Ka'venusho

The conflict between Urtho and Ma'ar begins when Ma'ar's conquests of lands beyond Predain reach the border of Tantara. Ma'ar detonates a fear spell in the palace of High King Leodhan of Tantara, but Lady Cinnabar is shielded and is able to contact Urtho for aid. The king and nobles flee due to the spell
📖

Mages with the remnants of Urtho's Third Army create a Gate which throws them far to the North. They will eventually found the nation of Iftel
📖
☼
Some of Urtho's people and mercenaries (very likely the Sixth Army) use a Gate but are flung far, far out east, to a territory that will eventually become "the heart of" the Eastern Empire. (The modern Empire's official histories do not mention the Gate, stating that the Empire was founded by mercenaries who "marched off" to conquer land of their own.)
☼
📖
☼
Urtho tries to lure Ma'ar through a Gate to his Tower, hoping the destruction upon Urtho's death will kill Ma'ar. Instead, Skandranon delivers Urtho's ultimate weapon, which will dissolve the bonds of spells, to Ma'ar. Ma'ar responds by killing himself, saying he will live forever
📖
Skandranon, Kechara and Aubri dive through Urtho's Gate back to the Tower. Aubri suggests that Urtho purpose the gate for a new destination ☼
📖
At the k'Leshya site, Amberdrake sees a great flash of light in the East, turning “night into full day for one long, horrible moment.” Everyone assumes it is Urtho's Tower, not knowing about the destruction of Ma'ar's Palace. Urtho redirects the last-minute gate to the k'Leshya site, and Kechara, Aubri and Skandranon tumble through it. Then “the Eastern horizon erupted with fire - again” as Urtho's Tower self-destructs upon his death ☼

The Mage Storms hit the shields and change magic forever
📖
The Mage Storm lasts for a day
📖
☼
Far to the east, the first wave of Mage Storms sweeps across the eight county-sized kingdoms ruled by High King Sonat the First in what will later become the Eastern Empire. He shields his mage equipment, expending the lives of half of his mages and, after the Storms, has the only magical power left, paving the way to crown himself Emperor
📖
📖
☼
Changecircles appear randomly throughout the land, places charged with magic, containing strange plants and animals that have been merged together. Other displacement circles occur, where no magic lingers but a foreign circular area of land has appeared in a place it doesn’t belong, such as a circular section of forest in the middle of a meadow. The original area of land has vanished, presumably swapped with the area that has replaced it, so there might be a circular meadow in the middle of a forest

Master Thomas & Errold find the spot where they build Errold's Grove

Melysatra and Need travel away from the epicenter of the Mage Storms, because the ongoing effects are weaker with distance. They assist people with troubles, using her mage powers and Need’s combat skills. But Melysatra has borne Need for forty-five (45) years and is ready to settle down, maybe open a tavern
📖
☼
Melysatra and Need come to a tall, ancient forest, and find a village threatened by a Beast. Three of Urtho’s soldiers, from Warrik’s Wolves, are there for the same reason. They camp for the night in a ten to fifteen acre field, a perfect circle that also cuts into nearby trees, obviously displaced. The village tavern and inn was formerly in the area, and vanished in the displacement
♘
📖
The group follows a tracker to the Beast, which was clearly a victim of a circle, being a terrible mesh of a colddrake and a makaar, but is unable to re-enter the circle to change back. It charges the team, knocking out two of the soldiers. Suddenly Need demands to be given to Pol. Melysatra is confused as Pol is clearly male, but she hands over the sword. The three of them kill the Beast, and Melysatra realizes that Pol was born in the wrong body. Need offers to use the magic of the changecircle to transform Pol to female, but it is a terrible risk. Pol agrees wholeheartedly, and carries Need into the circle. Melysatra gathers up the unconscious men and they make camp ☼
📖
☼
Pol, transformed, emerges from the circle bearing an exhausted Need. The village is amazed at Pol’s “sacrifice” to save them. They throw a feast for the team
📖
☼
Pol’s fellow soldiers are bewildered by the change, and Pol and Melysatra realize that Pol needs to make her own way. Need explains that Pol should simply exert her will for whatever magic she needs, as Need is exhausted and may sleep for a long time. As Pol departs at Need’s silent beckoning, Melysatra arranges to build the tavern she has wanted

Like their brethren, they pray to the Goddess. She gives them the knowledge they need, but charges them to cleanse the lands, destroying evil creatures and any mage weapons they find, helping the innocent, and finding shelter for animals. 📖
Vanyel Ashkevron and Stefen head north in search of the mage who killed three Herald-Mages and attacked Vanyel Ashkevron
📖
In the lawless territory north of Valdemar, multiple groups of bandits hired by “Master Dark” go out every day hunting for a Herald
📖
Vanyel and Stefen reach Valdemar’s last guardpost at the edge of unclaimed territory, having plowed through continual snowstorms, camping at the side of the road. The snowstorms didn’t have the earmarks of wizard weather, but when the Guardpost Captain remarks on the unusual snowfall, Vanyel realized that the storms were created and sent from the north
📖
Vanyel and Stefen are ambushed by dozens of bandits. Stefen’s horse bucks him off and he flees the melee on foot until he drops from exhaustion. He is overwhelmed by guilt for abandoning Vanyel and heads back
📖
Stefen reaches the ambush site and finds Yfandes’ motionless, tail-less body. There is no sign of Vanyel amongst the carnage. Stefen collapses with grief
📖
A bespelled powder provided by Master Dark was used to block Vanyel’s powers. At Lord Rendan’s bandit lair, Vanyel is brutally beaten and then horrifically assaulted by the bandits. After they are through, Rendan realizes that Vanyel is nearly dead, and sends for a healer to keep him alive for Master Dark
📖
Old Man Brodie has the Healing Gift but his fears interfered with his training. He gave up and moved north out of Valdemar, and now treats only animals, using his Gift covertly, concealing it by also applying ordinary treatments. However, three years ago the bandits discovered his secret and blackmailed him, regularly requiring him to treat their combat injuries. Today when he returns from healing a colt, a bandit is waiting to fetch him
📖
Brodie is outraged at Vanyel’s condition. In addition to the assault, he is bleeding internally in a dozen places. Rendan orders him to do whatever it takes, on penalty of death for failure
📖
Stefen realizes that Vanyel may still be alive elsewhere. He notices that Yfandes’ tail stump is bleeding, which means she is still alive. He searches her body for something magical that is holding her unconscious
📖
Stefen finds a dart under Yfandes’ mane, tingling with magic. When he removes it, she jumps to her feet
📖
Brodie discovers that Vanyel’s Healing Magic is keeping him alive. Vanyel’s vast storehouse of magic power is there for Brodie to use, but the spell blocking his Mage Gift is also blocking his Healing. Brodie finds that the spell is unbreakable from the inside, but clumsily constructed on the outside. He finds a point where it is giving Vanyel synesthesia, a physical connection that Brodie can reach. He gleefully sets to work to crack its’ shell, knowing this will allow Vanyel to free himself entirely
📖
Yfandes takes charge of Stefen and they set out to rescue Vanyel
📖
Vanyel prowls around inside his own mind, enraged. He periodically tests the confining spell, and at last it cracks. He breaks out in a wild fury, looking for any target
📖
Yfandes and Stefen find the bandits’ lair. As they look it over, flames burst out of the building in an explosion of Magic power. They rush in, and find many bodies burning, but others still alive. Stefen stops Vanyel from torturing the survivors. Vanyel is struck with guilt from the massacre, which included the innocent Healer. Yfandes and Stefen surround him with love, but know that the torment has broken him
📖
They leave but don’t know where to go. They are approached by a kyree, Aroon, who was attracted by the magic. He offers them shelter with the Hot Springs Clan
📖
They enter the kyrees’ cave complex in the foothills of the mountains where Vanyel had been heading. The kyree shaman Hyrryl cannot mindheal Vanyel but encourages Stefen to just give Vanyel his love
📖
Vanyel’s emotional recovery takes time, but it is necessary so that he will not be weak against Master Dark
📖
When he is ready to face the world again, he explains what he learned from probing Rendan’s mind. Master Dark has been operating a long time, since before Elspeth the Peacemaker was born. He wants Valdemar. For years he has been killing Herald-Mages and trainees from a distance, including children first manifesting their Mage Gift

At the Collegium, Master Bard Breda and Master Healer Gavin are concerned about twins, Bard-trainee Rhiannon and Healer-trainee Dionne. They are very interdependent; in weapons training, they cannot win against anyone in a one-on-one fight, but together they can beat any other pair of other students. For their internships, the twins must be separated, but the Masters decide that in addition, they will be sent in opposite directions ☼
📖
All of Valdemar’s Bards are implementing Bard Stefen’s mission to spread the word that Heralds are as good as Herald-Mages. Bard-Trainee Rhiannon and her mentor Lleryn head towards the Karse border, where they will meet up with Herald Deckert. Rhiannon's identical twin Dionne and her mentor, Journeyman-Healer Mari, head north on their routine circuit ☼
📖
The Gifts of Rhiannon and Dionne weaken more and more as their travels take them further apart, until they are no better at their work than a non-Gifted person ☼
📖
A man comes to the bard pair’s campsite, telling Rhiannon he is Deckert. Despite her weak talent Rhiannon plays some songs for him, including one she wrote about her twin and how much she misses her. When Rhiannon’s mentor Lleryn wakes up, she knows the man is an imposter ☼
📖
Dionne’s Healing Gift has become so ineffectual that she has been reduced to making and distributing herbal cures. Her mentor, Journeyman Mari, is doing the work of two and becoming resentful ☼
📖
Rhiannon and Lleryn are caught by an immobility spell cast by the imposter, a mage named Lompaux of Greylorn ☼
📖
Dionne is suddenly stricken by the knowledge that her twin is suffering and in danger, and insists on going after her. Mari is angry but Dionne becomes increasingly distraught. Mari refuses to set off towards Rhiannon’s location, but finally agrees to return to Haven to report ☼
📖
Officials at Haven think Dionne’s report is ridiculous, but are unable to contact or locate Rhiannon and Lleryn with any kind of mind magic. Herald Ciena and the real Herald Deckert set off with Dionne, who can sense her twin’s location due to their close connection. Her lack of a Companion slows their pace considerably; they are limited to her horse’s speed ☼
📖
Rhiannon and Lleryn are mystified by their captivity. The castle and its grounds are beautiful but there are very few servants, not enough to maintain it all. The only thing Lompaux wants is to hear the Twins song, over and over again, but is aware of any attempt by Rhiannon to use her Bardic Gift to influence him ☼
📖
As the rescue party reaches the Karse border, they realize two things. First, something is blocking their Gifts from seeing Rhiannon and Lleryn, but Dionne’s connection to her twin remains unaffected. Secondly, Dionne’s sense informs them that Rhiannon and Lleryn are just across the border in Karse ☼
📖
Rhiannon and Lleryn consult together and decide that Rhiannon should use her music to match Lompaux’s mood and then select other songs to slowly move it to a different emotion ☼
📖
The rescue party cautiously crosses into Karse and follows Dionne’s instincts towards the castle ☼
📖
Lompaux finally breaks down and trusts Rhiannon. Still playing her music, she leads him out of the castle and down the road where she can sense her twin approaching with the Heralds ☼
📖
The two parties meet and Lompaux is captured. When they return to the castle for Lleryn, they find it is much diminished. Lompaux’s illusions made it much bigger and nicer than it was ☼
📖
The lesson learned is that now that the Herald-Mages are gone, the power of all three branches of the Gifted, Healers, Bards and Heralds, will need to work together for the good of Valdemar ☼
📖

Tuck is studying Karsite in order to be prepared to go with Lan when they are sent to the frontlines of the war between Karse and Valdemar
📖
Pol attends another Privy Council meeting, this time to discuss the reports from the frontlines and how the new Trainees that were sent out are helping

During the meeting King Theran decides that it is about time to send Lan and his friend Tuck, along with Pol’s daughter Elenor, to the frontlines where Lan might be able to turn the tide of the war
📖
Lavan, Tuck, Pol, and Elenor leave at dawn to make their way to the frontlines of the war

Lavan and Tuck have graduated to their Whites. Elenor is now a full MindHealer

New Sun-priests, called the Dark Servants, arrive at the frontlines and during the night, they call upon demons that cross to the Valdemar side and take/kill people right in/from their tents
📖
Lavan meets Herald Pols wife, Healer Ilea, for the first time
📖
The small party is attacked by a lone assassin from Karse. He jumps from a tree to land behind Pol, pulling him down onto the ground. Lan freezes until the man slices across Pol’s eyes. Then Lan lets loose and burns the attacker to ash
📖
Pol has revived enough to force the group to continue their journey to the battlezone
📖
After communicating to others about the attack, Pol and Satiran get notified that there is trouble on the frontlines and they need to hurry there
📖
The group gallops into camp at sunset
📖
Herald Turag is the Lord Marshalls Herald. He has replaced Herald Marak, who had been one of the first non-fatal casualties and would be months in recovery, though he may lose a leg
📖
The Lord Marshall is named Weldon
📖
Lan calls down the fire and causes the bonfires of the Dark Servants to erupt and sweep across to other fires on the Karsite side, engulfing the priests. Soon the wall of fire began to slowly push the Karsites back towards their own border, burning everything in its path
📖
Lord Marshalls Herald Turags’ Companion is named Adan
📖
Herald Turag requests and is granted permission to resign as Lord Marshalls Herald and be placed back on duty with the army. He is replaced by Herald Pol, who becomes the new Lord Marshalls Herald
📖
After finally waking, Lavan is approached by member so of the army, picked up and carried to the Lord Marshall where, among cheers, he is proclaimed Lavan Firestorm
📖
Among those to go over maps and plan strategy are Lavan, Pol, the Lord Marshall, Herald Fedor, and Commander Releigh. Lavan is assigned to work with Herald Fedor, Scout Calum, and Herald Tuck
📖
Lavan meets Diera Ashkevron and Ben Dotes, the retired Horsemaster of Forst Reach. Ben notes that Barnebin is the name of the new Horsemaster
📖
Lavan has been travelling with a scouting party to find and root out nests of Karsite troops hidden in the hills
📖
Lavan destroys an entire farm and part of a mountain when he tries to burn a silo and ignites the grain chaff and fumes inside
📖
New orders come in and the scouts must now find a spot for Lavan so he can see around the area and hold back the Karsite army, giving the Valdemar army time to get to them
📖
The scouts and Tuck find the perfect spot for Lan to be where he can see the pass and be able to block the Karsites as they approach
📖
Lavan stops the advance, for the time being, with a wall of fire
📖
Heralds with archers on Companion-back arrive to help hold the pass from any Karsites Lan lets through
📖
As the Valdemar army arrives and Lan lets the fire-curtain down, he changes tactics and starts bursting fire from out of the snow at random locations. This slows the Karsite advance allowing the Valdemar army to handle the rush from the enemy
📖
Pol and Satiran look up to where Lan is and notice movement from behind them
📖
Heralds with Foresight begin calling for retreat. Suddenly the whole Valdemar army is scrambling in fear as fast as they can away from the battle. A premonition of impending doom sweeps the Heralds and soon the army is retreating as fast as it can
📖
An assassins crossbow bolt slams into Kalira’s chest killing her within moments
📖
Lavan Firestorm lets loose with a mental howl of anguish just before he lets loose the dragon within him. “Fire, elemental, unstoppable, came to earth. It exploded down out of the sky and drove down on the Karsites like the very hammer of the gods. It spewed up out of the snow to meet the down-rushing flames of the sky-fires. In a single moment, it transformed the entire side of the mountain to a furnace, an inferno, and it spread from there faster than a man could run.”
📖
The Death Bell tolls for Lavan Chitward, known as Firestorm
📖
The firestorm comes to an end having destroyed everything on the mountain and in the pass below it
📖
Pol and Satiran have recovered enough from their grief to slowly get back to their duties
📖
The Valdemaran army has finally finished piecing itself back together after a hasty retreat from the inferno
📖
Tuck, Fedor, Elenor, Ilea, Pol, Satiran, and Wulaf, their guide, all make the journey to the spot where Lavan died to see what is left. They find the path to the spot is too blocked for further travel, though Wurlaf is able to scramble up and recover some ashes
📖
Elenor recovers from the loss of Lan and begins to move on
📖
Tuck and Macy help each other and Macy moves into the Palace as a member of the Queen’s household
📖
Thanks to the efforts of the Healers and Ilea, Pol is able to see again, though not as well as he used to
📖
Pol, Ilea, Satiran, Tuck, Macy, Elenor and Wurlaf all go back to the now cleared spot on the mountain where Lavan and Kalira died. There they discover a firecone growing in the ashes of the fires
📖
Each of them say their goodbyes to Lavan and Kalira, in their own way
